Need some help to identify Greek coin
« στις: Νοέμβριος 03, 2019, 02:19:25 μμ »

Hello, I would appreciate any help in trying to identify this coin.

I bought today a coin which I'm having some trouble trying to identify it. Google search and reverse image search didn't helped much.
The coin is most probably made from bronze, one side looks modern it has Greek inscriptions and the number 20, on the other side it looks ancient and represents a bearded charioteer.

Yes, I've done some research and it seems to be a church token from the church of PROFITIS ILIAS, 20 para.

Τι λες βρε Μάρκο; Είχαν οι αρχαίοι Προφήτη Ηλία;

It is definitely a church token of Prophet Elias church. This was very common18th and 19th century in Minor Asia and North territories of today so called Turkey. (Kapadocia etc.)

Prophet Elias is considered the patron of mountaintops and climbers/ hikers in Greece. You will find small shrines and churches dedicated to Prophet Elias all over the country on hills and mountains.
Due to the close resemblance of the Greek pronunciation of the names Elias and Sun (Elias and Helios), where you only need to change one letter to switch from one name to the other, the prophet is often depicted as flying in a flaming chariot in the sky.
According to Greek folklore, Prophet Elias and Saint Nicholas (patron of sailors) were the best of friends, living at the sea-side. But the two clashed at some point, and Elias decided to go away, as far as possible. He carried a wooden oar with him, and asked people on his way to identify the object. People identified it as an oar, and he pressed on futher away and up the mountains. When someone identified the oar as "wood", Elias felt he was far enough from Nicholas and made that place his new home.

Very interesting. Thanks for the clarifications, I thought it was a mythical character like Helios or Phaeton.
