1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-150 Thick, Pollock-178, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. The obverse is the same as the regular issue 1853 quarter eagle. The pattern reverse die bears the denomination ONE CENT within a wreath. The E in CENT is widely but lightly repunched north. Struck with a reeded edge in an alloy of 30% nickel, 60% copper, and 10% tin.

The obverse is the same as that used to coin regular-issue 1853 quarter eagles. The reverse shows the denomination ONE CENT within a laurel wreath. Struck in a 40% nickel, 60% copper alloy with a reeded edge.

The Mint wasted little time designing this issue, combining an existing obverse die with a simple, rudimentary reverse. USPatterns.com estimates a population of approximately two dozen survivors.

Three Cent Obverse Design Cent Patterns


1857 E1C One Cent, Judd-186, Pollock-222, High R.7

A large bust of Liberty faces left, similar to that seen on the issued 1865 three cent nickel. The reverse has ONE CENT in the center and is encircled by a wreath. This variant combines the high date quarter eagle pattern obverse from Judd-189 with the 1853 pattern cent reverse of Judd-149. The denticles are different lengths on each side, which further suggest a muled die combination. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

1868 P1C Cent, Judd-605, Pollock-670, R.5,  Cameo PCGS. Small pattern cent with an obverse similar to the adopted three cent nickel design, and a reverse with a large Roman numeral I in the center surrounded by a wreath. Part of the 8 in the date is buried in Liberty's lowest curl. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Struck in nickel, copper, and aluminum, with the nickel pieces most frequently encountered.

The obverse is similar to that of the issued three cent nickel. The reverse bears the wreath of the issued three dollar gold piece. The denomination is expressed on the reverse as a single plain Roman column. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

On the obverse, Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Around, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and below, the date. The reverse has a large Roman numeral I enclosed within a wreath of wheat, corn, tobacco, and cotton. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This is Pollock's high date variety, considered by him to be slightly scarcer than the centered date variety.

The obverse exhibits a bust of Liberty facing left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery and the date below the bust. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. A Roman numeral I is centered in a laurel wreath on the reverse. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

Pollock records three different varieties of Judd-666 that he identifies as Pollock-741, 742, and 743, based on the date position and the style of ribbons at the bottom of the reverse. Pollock-743 has delicate bow ribbons on the reverse. Each is individually rated R.6 in his reference, while the cumulative rarity for Judd-666 is R.5.

Braided Hair Cent Patterns

1854 P1C One Cent, Judd-160, Pollock-187, R.4, PR64

This familiar pattern is mid-sized between the large and small cent, an intermediate step in the transition toward the cent in the diameter as we know it today. Aside from the absence of stars, the types are retained from the Large cent, but are smaller in scale, especially the wreath. Struck in bronze with a plain edge.

1854 P1C One Cent, Judd-161 Original, Pollock-187, R.4

The design is similar to the large cent then in circulation, but there are no stars on the obverse, and the planchet is smaller--just about 25.4 mm (1 inch), compared with a diameter for the regular large cent of 27.5 mm (1.08 inches). Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge.
While the measurements above do not seem to be a dramatic difference, it is one that is immediately noticeable. The corresponding weights, of course, differ as well. Originals and restrikes are known. The originals, per Pollock, weigh in the neighborhood of 91 to 100 grains (5.9 to 6.5 gm), while the restrikes weigh around 113-114 grains (7.3-7.4 gm). By way of comparison, a standard 1854 large cent would weigh 10.9 gm when new. PCGS has only certified one piece as a Restrike.

The obverse is the resurrected design from the Braided Hair large cent in production from 1843 to 1857, with the same reverse design from that coinage. Remnants of misplaced digits can be seen in the border dentils below the date. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.
